Ever feel like you’re in groundhog day? Like every new day parenting bleeds into the last and you’re just picking up the same toys every morning and cleaning the same kitchen every night, with a smattering of messy art projects in between?
That’s how I felt after the birth of my second child. Every day I ran the same parenting gauntlet hoping just to survive, and every night I’d collapse on the couch exhausted. I was too weary to do anything other than binge watch Netflix and munch dark chocolate.
I have been a devoted student of personal growth and habits for over a decade, since I first quit some very bad habits that were ruining my life. Since that time, I voraciously devoured self-help books and personal development podcasts. But I had lost sight of my passion in the chaos of parenting. Who had time to work on themselves when there were all these small people to take care of?
But if Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy. I realized that I was focused on giving my children all of me instead of the best of me. By focusing on small tweaks that I could realistically work into my busy life, I found more energy to make bigger changes. As a former attorney, I meticulously researched how to better my nutrition, sleep habits, and parenting with simple grace.
Finally, I was able to start dreaming bigger. I set goals for myself and my family life. I found myself again, and in doing so I gave my family back the interesting, vivacious mother and wife that they’d been missing. And I gave myself back a dear friend.
Mamas need to grow too, and fast, to keep up with the ever-changing, never-ceasing demands of parenthood. Here, at Reining in Mom, I try to inspire moms to make personal growth a priority. You’ll find articles about habits and goals, getting brave, clean living and simple parenting.
